Tour Description
For over 2,000 years, people have crossed the Alps at the Gotthard Pass. Merchants and pilgrims walked it, mule caravans carried goods across it, and today high-speed trains pass beneath it. We’ll follow in their footsteps - using some of Switzerland's most iconic forms of transport.
We meet at Lucerne Train Station at 8:00 am and travel south towards the Alps. As the mountains rise around us, we'll pass lakes, valleys and villages before entering the Gotthard Base Tunnel - the world's longest railway tunnel.
In just 20 minutes, we emerge on the southern side of the Alps. It’s the gateway to Switzerland’s Italian-speaking region of Ticino.
From here, we board one of the iconic yellow PostBuses and climb towards the Gotthard Pass. The road follows the famous Tremola, with its granite cobblestones and 24 winding hairpin bends.
At 2,106 metres (6,909 ft) above sea level, the scenery changes completely. Trees give way to rocky terrain, crystal-clear mountain lakes, and historic granite buildings that have welcomed travellers since medieval times.
We visit Sasso San Gottardo, a fascinating former military fortress hidden deep inside the mountain.
During a 2-hour guided tour in English, you'll discover the history of this secret bunker and how it helped protect one of Europe's most strategic Alpine crossings.
After the tour, you'll have free time to explore the pass, take photos, and enjoy lunch.
Our return journey takes us by bus and train to Flüelen, at the southern end of Lake Lucerne. Here we board a boat for a relaxing cruise.
The shores of the lake are closely linked to the legend of William Tell, Switzerland's national hero.
